As a surveyor, you are in charge of documenting the compliance/non-compliance of structures built in a Special Flood Hazard Area on FEMA’s Elevation Certificate.
Completing an EC correctly ensures that the homeowner’s policy is rated properly. Compliant homeowners will receive the lowest premium available. If non-compliant, the EC will point out to the insurance agent what area the homeowner needs to change to become compliant and thus receive a lower premium. A frequent red flag for structure compliance is proper flood openings.
SMART VENT’s (1) Hour FREE course covers FEMA’s TB1-08 and Elevation Certificates. Once you complete the course, SMART VENT will list your firm on smartvent.com in our online “Find a Surveyor” section.
A listing in our “Find a Surveyor” section brings your firm instant creditability, we will refer customers to you for their Elevation Certificate needs, and since you have already attended our training course you will have the tools and expertise to fill out the flood vent section of the EC in a timely, profitable manner.

The Insurance Forms and Certification page on our website, found here, was created to simplify the explanation of requirements of the documents needed for flood vents to be accepted by your insurance agent. This page goes over the actual ICC-ES Evaluation Report (which is SMART VENT’s Accepted Certification) as well as some FEMA and NFIP documents that support that claim.
Please check it out and let us know if you have any questions.
Remember, SMART VENT’s ICC-ES Evaluation Report ESR-2074 is a national certification and accepted everywhere. Our vents were specifically designed as flood vents and tested as flood vents, and therefore get the higher rating of 200 sq. ft. per 16″ x 8″ flood vent.
Again, the Insurance Forms and Certification page can be found on our website, page located here.

When it comes to building codes, some property owners balk at the cost of compliance; experience, however, has taught others that the real cost is in the consequences of non-compliance. The Rengstorff Windrose Homeowners Association (RWHOA) of Mountain View, California learned this in 2009, when their NFIP flood insurance premiums unexpectedly jumped to nearly $10,000! The Association identified flood ventilation as a key area in which improvement could remedy their insurance rates. Research led them to SMART VENT, Inc. The company’s line of ICC-ES certified, FEMA-accepted flood vents were the perfect solution to the Association’s problem.
